CHAPTER 5
Sarah
I was nervous. I could feel every fiber in my body try to pull me away from the house. There was a reason I hadn’t told my father that I was coming. There was a reason I hadn’t taken five minutes out of getting ready to get in touch with him and that’s because I wasn’t even sure if I really wanted to see him again.
I’d left the house on such bad terms. My father had agreed to pay for my college tuition, but only if I agreed to stay away from the house. He didn’t want to see me. To him I was a disappointment. To him I was the very image of what had gone wrong in his life.
I felt Rob’s eyes on me as we made our way up the small set of wooden stairs that led to the porch. I hesitated. I could tell that Rob had picked up on my anxiety, but I knew that he couldn’t know the real reason as to why I was anxious.
I reached the door and I let my hand hover over it before I finally found the strength to knock and alert the household to my presence. I heard a shuffle of footsteps almost immediately and the door opened. “Sarah?” The housekeeper looked at me with surprise. “What are you doing here?”
“I’ve come to see my father,” I said as I took a step toward the house.
The housekeeper stepped a little in front of me as though she was trying to prevent me from entering. “I’m not sure your father is expecting you,” she said, as her eyes met mine.
“Well, then it’s lucky I’m his daughter and I don’t have to call ahead,” I said, as I pushed my way into my home.
A flustered look washed over her face. “Well, I suppose I’ll go and wake your father up, then,” she said in a clearly agitated tone.
“I suppose you had better,” I said sarcastically, as I made my way to the kitchen.
“I think you’ll find the cook has also gone to bed,” the housekeeper said snidely when she saw the direction I was heading in.
“Well, it’s a good job I know how to cook for myself then isn’t it?” I said with a grin, before I turned my back on her completely and walked into the kitchen. I heard Rob’s footsteps following behind me.
“You’re house staff are rude,” Rob said when he sensed that I didn’t know what to say.
“She’s never really liked me much,” I said. I pulled open the fridge and scanned inside.
“You can tell,” Rob said quickly. “Is there a reason that she seems to think that you’re the devil incarnate?”
“I’m pretty sure that she has a thing for my dad,” I said as I pulled out plates full of leftovers and put them on the breakfast bar so that Rob could look through and eat what he wanted. “I don’t ever really remember doing anything to her personally, but whenever my father and I argued she would always be worse than normal with me.
